The United 4 Smart Sustainable Cities - U4SSC is a UN initiative coordinated by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Supported by numerous agencies worldwide, it aims to advocate the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the transition towards smart sustainable cities.
The Blockchain 4 Cities thematic group is part of U4SSC deliverables. This group is responsible for the development of a report in which the blockchain technology offers possible solutions and services for the development of smarter and more sustainable cities. The group is made up of 66 people from 6 different continents and with diverse professional backgrounds representing international and national organizations, agencies, cities, NGO’s, private sectors, academia and independent experts.
Deusto is involved as a member of the experts group in the Smart Transportation field by means of the technological and research staff of DeustoTech, its research and transfer institute. The work of this group will be developed throughout 2019 finishing next December with the publication of a report. The objectives of this initiative are on the one hand to present the potential transforming effect of Blockchain; on the other hand, to identify, define and evaluate the benefits and risks of its use in cities and as a result to create a framework for the evaluation and design of new policies that make them smarter and more sustainable. The participation of an international and multidisciplinary community of researchers and experts in Blockchain technology and its recommendations at the normative level will contribute to the successful digital transformation of cities.
